Among the many important things that ballerinas need for class in order to function properly, the essentials are soft slippers, attire, and pointe shoe equipment.
A decent pair of soft slippers is used daily. Either split sole or full sole slippers will suffice--unless an instructor says otherwise. Beginning ballerinas only use these for class, but advanced dancers use these and pointe shoes.
Each dancer has unique feet, so choosing a pair of pointe shoes must be meticulously done at a fitting. Pointe shoes are dependent upon arch, foot width, size, and toe length. After finding the right pair, ballerinas can choose from toe spacers, toe pads, tape, or even lamb's wool. These items help keep the toes and feet protected from severe blistering and discomfort.
Each instructor has different requirements for class. But most require standard pink tights, a black leotard, soft slippers, and a skirt and/or shorts. Most upper level ballerinas can wear colorful leotards and some accessories, like legwarmers, perspiration pants, light warm up jackets, and so forth.
